팝페라 테너 임형주가 부른 '천개의 바람이 되어(a thousand winds)는 2009년 고 노무현 대통령의 추모곡으로 부른 노래로

원곡은 1932년 당시 미국 볼티모어에 거주하던 메리 엘리자베스 프라이(Mary Elizabeth Frye)가 지은 시에 곡을 붙힌 것이다.

 

이 시는 메리와 함께 살고 있던 유태인 여인 마가렛 슈바츠코프(Margaret Schwarzkopf)가

독일에 계신 어머니가 아픈데도 당시 나치의 반유대정책으로 독일에 갈 수가 없었고

결국 어머니가 돌아가셨는데도 그 무덤에 가서 울 수 조차도 없었던 비참한 상황을 듣고 지은 시이다.

시는 돌아가신 어머니가 딸을 위해 슬퍼말라는 위로의 내용이 담겨있다.

이 노래를 부른 임형주 측은 세월호 참사 추모곡으로 헌정했다고 한다.
